Mystical Morocco

After my first visit to Morocco, I knew I wanted to return.

Morocco has so much to offer — mountains, beaches, hilltop villages, deserts, ancient cities and ruins, magnificent palaces, and so much more. Every region has its own unique charm, culture, and landscape, making it a truly fascinating destination to explore.

Located in North Africa, Morocco is easily accessible from Australia with just one stopover. If you are already travelling through the UK or Europe, it is only a short flight — or even a ferry ride from Spain.

Arabic and Berber are the official languages, although French and English are widely spoken throughout the main tourist areas. Tourism is Morocco’s second-largest industry, with its beautiful subtropical climate attracting visitors from all over the world each year.

Travelling around Morocco is relatively easy by road, and I would highly recommend this over flying between cities. When you factor in airport check-in and flight times, travelling by car is often quicker and far more enjoyable. The roads connecting the major cities are excellent, with modern multi-lane freeways making travel comfortable and convenient.

Morocco is a destination filled with colour, history, warmth, and adventure — a place that leaves a lasting impression long after you return home.

I would highly recommend spending at least a night or two in one of Morocco’s beautiful riads. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace built around an interior garden or courtyard, and they offer a truly authentic experience. There is something incredibly special about sitting on a rooftop terrace at dusk, sipping a cocktail or glass of wine while listening to the call to prayer echo across the city — it is simply enchanting.

There are so many incredible places to visit throughout Morocco, but my three favourites are listed below:

MARRAKECH
Situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, this imperial city is vibrant, atmospheric, and overflowing with history. There is so much to see and do here. I also have a wonderful story about purchasing a Moroccan door and table — but you will need to contact me for that one! For the ultimate Moroccan experience, stay within the medina walls in a traditional riad.

FES
Medieval Fes was Morocco’s capital for more than 400 years and is home to one of the world’s oldest walled cities. Exploring the ancient medina on foot is an unforgettable experience. A visit to the famous tanneries may be an assault on the senses, but it is absolutely worth it.

ESSAOUIRA
I absolutely loved Essaouira and could easily have stayed longer. In the 1960s, it became known as a relaxed seaside hippie hangout. Today, it offers beautiful beaches, charming restaurants, and rooftop terraces where you can sip mint tea while overlooking the ocean.

My Three Must-Do Moroccan Experiences

Enjoy a Traditional Hammam
Experience a traditional Moroccan steam bath where you are scrubbed, cleansed, and massaged. Many hotels and riads offer luxurious hammam experiences that are both relaxing and rejuvenating.

Take a Moroccan Cooking Class
Moroccan cuisine is influenced by Berber, Arabic, Turkish, Middle Eastern, and French traditions. Most cooking classes begin with a visit to the local market to purchase fresh ingredients before learning to prepare traditional dishes such as tagine and couscous.

Have Dinner at Djemma el Fna in Marrakech
Located in the heart of Marrakech, Djemma el Fna is the city’s famous central square. By late afternoon, it transforms into a lively spectacle filled with snake charmers, musicians, jugglers, storytellers, and bustling food stalls serving delicious local dishes.

Morocco is a captivating destination full of colour, culture, history, and unforgettable experiences — a country I would highly recommend visiting.
